India’s tourism and hospitality sector is preparing for a major leap forward, with a clear vision to drive economic growth, create millions of jobs, and position the country as one of the world’s top travel destinations. The strategy—anchored in policy reforms, infrastructure investment, and the integration of the unorganised workforce—was in focus at the National Tourism Conclave held on August 12–13.

Tourism: A High-Value Industry with Untapped Potential

While tourism already contributes significantly to India’s GDP, industry leaders believe its true economic and employment potential remains underutilised. Unlike other sectors that have undergone deep reforms, tourism has yet to see the same transformative policy push.

One key challenge is the unorganised segment—millions of guides, homestay owners, transport providers, and small tour operators—whose work remains largely invisible in official statistics. Without formal recognition, they often miss out on subsidies, training, and promotional opportunities.

Incredible India 2.0: A Renewed Global Identity

The proposed Incredible India 2.0 campaign is set to reimagine the country’s tourism brand for a modern, competitive market. Building on the original campaign’s global recognition, the updated version will focus on:

Advanced digital marketing and immersive storytelling

Infrastructure upgrades across airports, railways, and road networks

Promotion of niche segments like wellness tourism, eco-adventures, rural stays, and heritage trails

Personalised experiences tailored to domestic and international travelers seeking authenticity

Expanding Job Opportunities Nationwide

Tourism is one of the few industries that can create jobs across urban hubs, heritage towns, and remote rural areas. The sector’s expansion is expected to directly benefit communities where alternative livelihoods are limited.

Skill development will be a central pillar—covering customer service, foreign languages, digital booking systems, and sustainable tourism practices—to align service standards with international expectations.

Integrating the Unorganised Sector

Formalising the unorganised workforce could be a turning point for Indian tourism. Suggested measures include:

Simplified registration processes

Access to low-interest microfinance

Inclusion in official marketing campaigns

Access to training and certification programs

Such steps would not only boost earnings for small operators but also raise service quality, safety, and consistency for travelers.

A Roadmap for the Future

The Conclave is expected to produce a comprehensive roadmap addressing both immediate and long-term priorities—ranging from infrastructure investments to public-private collaboration

With policy reforms, inclusive growth strategies, and a refreshed Incredible India 2.0 identity, India is well-positioned to emerge as a global tourism powerhouse—driving rural development, preserving cultural heritage, and strengthening international engagement through increased people-to-people connections.
